Tommy Nunez Sr. NBA Referee
I am deeply saddened to learn of the loss of a very dear friend & colleague, Tommy Nunez, Sr. Tommy was a legendary NBA referee who was the league's 1st Hispanic NBA Referee. He was always kind, genuine, gracious, clever, comedic and especially humble above all.
He organized the Tommy Nuñez National Hispanic Basketball Classic, an annual tournament in Arizona that brought Latino players and referees together and raised money for youth scholarships.
Tommy, was a great speaker. He represented his Mexican-American culture to all groups including our nation's indigenous population. He authored his own book which demonstrated that despite adversity and challenges he faced throughout his young life, he found pathways to overcome his obstacles that led to his success.
Later in my officiating career Tommy had me accompany him to perform officiating clinics to the FIBA's Euroleague's staff of officials under the guidance of their Supervisor, Miguelo Betancor & the support of their FIBA Europe Secty General, Nar Zanolin.
I will miss my friend deeply. He brought joy, smiles, laughs and officiating guidance to me and others. In my heart and mind, Tommy Nunez is an NBA Hall of Fame individual especially n being the first Hispanic to referee our greatest players in the world and did this feat for 30 years. NBR ANNOUNCEMENTS:
As the CEO of NunnBetterRefs (NBR), I am pleased to announce our 2nd NBR Official to be appointed to the professional basketball league titled, the National Basketball League of Australia (NBL) for their 2025-26 season.
I remain continually grateful to be associated with the NBL Australia and their Director of Officials for allowing me to target and present officials of the NBR for potential candidacy as an import official to this prestigious professional basketball league.
Ken Arrick, a current NBL appointee follows Ken Widgeon, now beginning his 3rd NBL season.
The NBR is a "hands-on" classwork & practicum program for working higher level Colleges & Pro, TBL / BSL, etc games.
(The Basketball League (TBL-USA) ... & ... (The Basketball Super League (BSL - Canada).
We are please to include NBA scouts, Al Battista and former NBA Scout, Sampson Brue ot monitor & interact with NBR Officials where they also offer opinions / guidance and identifying officials who apopear able to work pro basketball.
Officials in the NBA Pipeline are also targeted for potential international officiating.
ProAm Officials and other pro-oriented leagues and their participants are welcome as well.
Congratulations again to the NBR's two recent import appointee Officials to the NBL Australia's Officiating staff.
Their success will continue to provide opportunities to future prospects associated with the NunnBetterRefs Training, Development, Instructional Initiative (TDII) coupled with attending NBR.
