About NBR

Ronnie Nunn.

Former NBA referee for nineteen seasons and the league’s Director of Officials for five. Brooklyn-born, GWU Hall of Famer, and 2024 New York City Basketball Hall of Fame inductee.

The Story

From Brooklyn to the NBA Finals — and back to the classroom.

Ronnie Nunn was born in Brooklyn, New York and attended Brooklyn Technical High School, where he was an All-City basketball player and All-City honorable mention in baseball. He went on to George Washington University, was inducted into the GWU Basketball Hall of Fame, and named to the school’s All-Century Team.

After college he played two seasons of professional basketball for Leon of the National Basketball Circuit in Mexico, where the Mexican press named him the North American player of the decade in the 1970s. Injury cut his playing career short. He was a member of three NBA training camps, the ABA Denver Rockets camp, and both New Jersey Nets and New York Knicks camps.

He spent ten years as a Special Education teacher and administrator and coached at Pace University from 1978–82 before being appointed to the NBA officiating staff in 1984. Over nineteen NBA seasons he officiated 1,134 regular season games, 73 playoff games, four NBA Finals contests (1998–2002), and the 1996 NBA All-Star Game — later serving five years as the league’s Director of Officials.

Today Ronnie continues in basketball as an officiating consultant, trainer and instructor to the Euroleague and NBL Australia, and serves as VP of Basketball Operations with The Basketball League (TBL) and the Basketball Super League of Canada. He is a recurring guest on BBallBreakdown, breaking down calls, mechanics and game-management decisions.

In 2024 Ronnie was honored as an inductee to the New York City Basketball Hall of Fame.

NBR Staff

Clinicians, instructors, observers.

NBR is led by Ronnie Nunn and supported by clinicians, instructors and guests rooted in professional and amateur basketball — from NBA Pro-Am beginnings to NBA and NCAA observer roles. Together they guide officials pursuing higher-level Varsity high school, college and pro-oriented competitions.

The staff prepares candidates for the NBA’s grassroots programs, G-League, WNBA, NBA — and worldwide competitive organizations like Euroleague, NBL Australia, NBL Canada, FIBA and Pro-Am leagues.

We value training and development, and we appreciate the trust each participant places in us to improve their abilities and reach their goals as officials.
